WATER

Almost all plantations require watering to a greater or lesser extent. Water quality is therefore a decisive factor in the success of a plantation. Natural or artificial reservoirs or rivers are the best sources of plantation water. Water from depth wells invariably contains a lot of minerals and is therefore not suitable for sprinkling or spraying as the deposits that form on the fruit renders it unsaleable. This sort of water is only suitable for drip watering systems.

Blueberry’s shallow root system makes it particularly susceptible to drought. Plantations therefore require watering, especially during spring and summer. Spray watering systems are most often used for this purpose. These can also be used during ground-frosts to protect the plants from freezing. Drip watering systems can also be applied if watering directly into the soil under a plant is required. These systems also provide for fertigation using liquid fertilisers.
